Crews have just 8 miles left to finish installing state-owned middle-mile fiber along Highway 20 — part of a 250.7-mile Mendocino County network within California’s 8,200-mile backbone — with the segment on track for completion by Christmas 2026. Once done, the line will connect to last-mile projects like Fort Bragg Fiber, linking local communities to national and international networks.

The Feliz Fire, which broke out near the 3600 block of Feliz Creek Road in Hopland and closed U.S. 101 for several hours, stabilized at 841 acres with 10% containment Sunday as more than 400 firefighters held the line. No structures were reported damaged as of Sunday morning. Roughly 500 people were evacuated, and the Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians opened its Redwood Valley tribal gymnasium as an overnight shelter after other Ukiah-area evacuation centers closed.

Superior Court Judge Patrick Pekin officiated the July 19 swearing-in of Bodhi, a 120-pound Giant Alaskan Malamute, as honorary mayor of Mendocino, capping a five-month fundraiser in which each dollar donated to the dog park counted as one vote. Bodhi — who ran on adoption-first initiatives, shelter fundraisers, and foster recruitment — cleared the 2,500-vote threshold on July 5, and proceeds will buy new bark for the park’s two play areas.

Federal regulators rejected the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District’s bid to intervene in PG&E’s plan to decommission the Potter Valley Project, ruling the Southern California district missed the December 1 deadline by more than seven months without explanation. EVMWD, which valued the project’s senior water rights at $500–850 million, may now pressure PG&E to sell rather than dismantle the century-old Eel River hydro facility.

Tindall has nearly filled the Junior Building through years of outreach, while the Home Arts Building this year features roughly 62 quilts and 60 preserves entries.

After about 25 years as the Redwood Empire Fair’s Fine Arts Building supervisor — and 22 at the Mendocino County Fair — Brenda Hodges is retiring, capping a tenure in which the self-taught artist also served as the fair’s poster artist for nearly a quarter century. The fair’s Beading Group created a tribute poster of her decades of fair posters, on display in the building for visitors to add their own notes of thanks.

Neil Kiger, 42, received the maximum 24-year prison term after a jury convicted him of 11 felony counts, including lewd acts and continuous sexual abuse of a child he acted as a stepfather to between 2020 and 2023, when the victim was 10 to 13.
