Slain Covelo Woman Identified
Teen suspect extradited to Mendocino County, funeral on Wednesday
The woman fatally shot on a rural Mendocino County road last weekend has been identified as Audrey Card, 38, of Covelo, and the teenage suspect in her killing was extradited from Butte County to face murder charges, authorities said Wednesday.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday April 29, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at the Methodist Church in Covelo, according to a note posted by Ann Warden, Card’s sister, on Facebook.
Card was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on the 23000 block of Charlie Hurt Highway shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday. Despite CPR administered by sheriff’s deputies and Round Valley Tribal Police officers, she was pronounced dead at 6:55 a.m.
The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office identified Card after investigators located and notified her next of kin. A forensic autopsy performed Tuesday confirmed she died from multiple gunshot wounds, and her death was ruled a homicide, according to a news release from Capt. Quincy Cromer.
A 16-year-old boy from Covelo was arrested Tuesday in Oroville after a brief foot chase. He was subsequently extradited to Mendocino County, where he was booked into Mendocino County Juvenile Hall. He is awaiting criminal proceedings on charges that include first-degree murder and personal use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Investigators said Card was shot while speaking by phone with a 15-year-old female relative who had just been assaulted by the suspect. Authorities allege the boy had been following and shooting at the girl’s car earlier that morning.
The suspect also faces charges of stalking, criminal threats and domestic battery related to the assault on the teenage girl. Because both the suspect and the assault victim are minors, their names are not being released under California law.
The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office at 707-463-4086 or the anonymous tip line at 707-234-2100.
