Woman Killed in Early Morning Shooting Near Covelo
Homicide investigation underway
A 38-year-old woman from Covelo was killed Sunday morning after being shot on a remote dirt road, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the incident was reported around 6:13 a.m. on April 19, when dispatchers received word that a gunshot victim was en route to the Covelo Volunteer Fire Department along Highway 162. The shooting reportedly occurred on a dirt road near Charlie Hurt Highway.
According to the sheriff’s office, the driver of the vehicle was unable to locate emergency personnel at the fire station and instead transported the woman to a nearby residence on South Airport Road in an effort to get help.
When deputies arrived at that location, they found multiple individuals attempting to assist the victim, who was unconscious and suffering from what authorities described as numerous suspected gunshot wounds. Deputies, along with officers from the Round Valley Tribal Police, began CPR and called for medical assistance.
Emergency responders continued life-saving efforts after arriving on scene, but the woman was pronounced dead at approximately 6:55 a.m.
Sheriff’s officials said a homicide investigation was immediately launched, with detectives from the agency’s investigations bureau taking over the case. Authorities have conducted multiple interviews and served search warrants as part of the ongoing investigation.
No additional information has been released, and officials said details are being withheld to preserve the integrity of the case.
