Ukiah Man Arrested in Stabbing That Left Victim Critically Injured

UKIAH, Calif. — A Ukiah man was arrested Friday night after a stabbing at a residence on Sunnycrest Drive left a 53-year-old man critically injured, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were dispatched to a home in the 4000 block of Sunnycrest Drive about 9:19 p.m. Sept. 4 after receiving a report of a disturbance involving a person covered in blood and reportedly armed with a knife. Dispatchers subsequently learned that another person at the residence was injured.

Deputies found Carlos Ortiz-Garcia, 23, outside the residence, covered in blood and involved in a verbal altercation with another man. According to the sheriff's office, Ortiz-Garcia struggled with deputies and California Highway Patrol officers when they attempted to detain him.

Deputies then found a 53-year-old man at the property with apparent stab wounds. He was treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital. The man was listed in stable but critical condition and was expected to survive, according to the sheriff's office.

Ortiz-Garcia also suffered a serious arm injury that required emergency surgery.

Sheriff's detectives obtained a search warrant and processed the scene with assistance from criminalists from the California Department of Justice. Investigators said they found evidence indicating that a violent attack had occurred.

Ortiz-Garcia was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, battery causing serious injury, burglary, and use of a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury. He was also booked on suspicion of using force to resist a peace officer after a deputy suffered minor hand lacerations during the detention.

Ortiz-Garcia also had a $2,500 misdemeanor arrest warrant for allegedly making a false report of a crime, according to the sheriff's office.

He was booked into the Mendocino County Jail and was being held in lieu of $1,002,500 bail.

The allegations have not been proven in court.
