Public Comment: Yesterday's Election Biggest Takeaway
This is a guest comment written by Peter McNamee
The biggest and most profound lesson from the Prop 50 election is the large number of rural counties that voted for Trump in 2024, but rejected Trump in this election. None of the urban counties that voted for Harris in 2024 voted no on prop 50.
It is this shift in conservative mostly rural counties - Lake, Imperial, Merced, Fresno, San Bernardino, Jan Joaquin, and Riverside - and the reduction in Trumps support in the rest of the counties, that speaks volumes that this is a rejection of failed Trump Republican promises.
Frankly, Dems didn’t need to reapportion the congressional districts - given these numbers they could beat Republicans in the current districts; if they prove they can deliver real improvements to voters not just make vague promises.
The real message is - now is the time to earn voter support by improving their lives. Gimmicks like gerrymandering, don’t make voters lives better.
