COVELO — A 27-year-old Covelo man was arrested on suspicion of shooting another man in the leg early Saturday during a confrontation over an alleged theft, according to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were sent to the area of Howard and Main streets around 2:50 a.m. Oct. 31 after a reported assault with a firearm. They found a 33-year-old Covelo man in the 29000 block of Howard Street, sitting in his vehicle with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was flown by air ambulance to an out-of-county hospital. His condition was not known Sunday.

The man told deputies he had been in the 58000 block of Main Street getting a car battery when Tyler Vann confronted him with a gun, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators say Vann learned the man was near his home, got a firearm, and went out to confront him about an alleged theft as the man was leaving. Vann then fired into the man’s vehicle, hitting him in the leg, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies served a search warrant at the scene and at Vann’s home and interviewed witnesses.

Based on physical evidence and where the two men were positioned, deputies found no evidence that the wounded man posed an imminent threat to Vann when the shot was fired, according to the release.

Vann was booked into the Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of assault with a firearm, with a special allegation of personally using a firearm in a violent felony. He was later released after posting $80,000 bail.
